A Weekend at Commonweal Building Community for Younger People with Wealth

Some younger people find family philanthropy interesting and joyful. But the truth is that others don’t. Growing up with wealth is not a rose garden, and the family dynamics of family philanthropy are not always fun.

In fact, many younger funders find both personal wealth and family philanthropy a real challenge. What is your experience? Have you found ways to navigate these deep waters? Have you learned lessons you can share with others? Or are you wrestling with these questions?

The challenges of living skillfully with money echo down from ancient times. The nature of money is fundamentally mysterious. How to live well with money is an art. Philanthropy is a craft. Like all crafts, practicing philanthropy well takes commitment and a willingness to learn from experience.

The ReSource Gathering is for younger people wrestling with these questions. It is a time to return to the Source. To share struggles, experiences, and joys.

We’ll follow Angeles Arrien’s four rules for the life of the spirit:

• Show up.
• Pay attention.
• Tell the Truth.
• And don’t be attached to the outcome.

For 40 years Commonweal has been a place where people gather to explore ideas, challenges and opportunities. Rachel Naomi Remen, a Commonweal elder who has helped physicians find meaning in their work says “Uncovering meaning is antecedent to finding deeper satisfaction in service work.” In other words, to find satisfaction in family philanthropy, it helps to uncover what meaning this work of service has for you.

Join Michael Lerner, President of the Jennifer Altman Foundation; Anne Germanacos, President of the Germanacos Foundation; Pia Infante, Trustee and Co-Executive Director of The Whitman Institute; and Oren Slozberg, Board member of the Barbara Smith Fund for this exploration at Commonweal’s beautiful retreat center.

Commonweal is nested on the cliffs above the Pacific Ocean in Point Reyes National Seashore, outside the picturesque town of Bolinas in Northern California.
