Our Location

Welcome to this place we now call Bolinas and the Pt Reyes Peninsula. The land where Commonweal sits—where we come together to learn and celebrate—was, for thousands of years, the home of the Coast Miwok people.

Two hundred years ago, Miwok life and culture had been unalterably disrupted. The people were scattered or forced into servitude, their villages destroyed, their ritual practices suppressed. The land went from being Mother of Life to being private property, parceled out by European settlers and governments: bought and sold. Today, the Coast Miwok live in different parts of what today we call Marin and Sonoma Counties. Miwok peoples continue their ancient traditions and are reviving the Miwok language. 

Many of us are wandering people. We come from many cultures, many of them were disrupted and destroyed. We are now fortunate enough to be the stewards of this piece of land under our feet. We don’t know all the ancient rituals or prayers of the Miwok who lived here, but we recognize that this is holy ground. We honor the Miwok elders, past and present.

May we do honor to this land. May our words and visions join with those of the ones who came before us and be medicine for the brokenness of time, place, and peoplehood.
